The delta, which was first detected in India in October last year, triggered a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, which peaked in April and May.

The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) stated that the frequency of the new AY.4.2 variant of COVID-19 is less than 0.1 per cent of all VOIs/VOCs and is too low to be a cause of concern at this time.

Its weekly bulletin states that vaccine effectiveness does not appear to be different for AY.4.2 compared to other delta variants.

INSACOG said the AY.4.2 version of COVID-19 accounts for less than 0.1 percent of all concern and interest types (VOC/VOI) and is too low to be a cause of concern at this time.

“Currently there is no biological basis for the increased transmissibility of AY.4.2, as epidemiologically, and the assay is in progress,” it said.

INSACOG noted that Delta (B.1.617.2 and AY.x) remains the main type of concern (VOC) in India and no new type of interest (VOI) or VOC is noted in India.

The delta, which was first detected in India in October last year, triggered a devastating second wave of the coronavirus pandemic in the country, which peaked in April and May.

INSACOG, a consortium of 28 national laboratories, was established in December 2020 to monitor genomic variations in SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. The All India Network works under the Union Ministry of Health.
