New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has recommended disciplinary action against former CBI Director Alok. Verma The officials gave this information on Wednesday for allegedly abusing their official position and violating the relevant service rules.
They said home Ministry (home Ministry) has written to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the nodal ministry of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to take necessary disciplinary action against Verma.
Officials said the action, if approved, could include forfeiture of Verma’s pension and retirement benefits either temporarily or permanently.
During his stint in the CBI, Verma, a 1979-batch (retired) Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was engaged in a bitter fight with a Gujarat-cadre IPS officer and his deputy Rakesh Asthana over allegations of corruption.
Both Verma and Asthana had leveled corruption allegations against each other.
Asthana is currently the Delhi Police Commissioner.
“Verma has been accused of abusing his official position and violating service rules. The home ministry has recommended necessary action against him,” a senior official said on condition of anonymity.
The Ministry of Home Affairs is the cadre controlling authority for IPS officers.
DoPT has forwarded the recommendation of the Ministry of Home Affairs Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the recruitment body for IPS officers, the officials said.
There is a need to consult UPSC before imposing fine on IPS officers, he added.
Verma took over as the CBI chief on February 1, 2017 for a fixed tenure of two years.
However, he was removed from the post on January 10, 2019 and was posted as Director General of Fire Service, Civil Defense and Home Guard – a low-key portfolio.
Verma did not accept the offer and wrote a letter to the government stating that he should be treated as retired as he had completed 60 years of age on July 31, 2017.
