Holi 2022: From Ram-Leela to Padmavat, when the festival of colors was more than a song

Holi, the festival of colors, not only infuses a new spirit in our lives but it sometimes changes the course of a film and gives a much needed twist. In films, Holi is used as an occasion to express love, to seal ties, to shame villains or to resolve conflicts. This year, let’s take a look at some of the iconic scenes from Bollywood that have been built around Holi celebrations:

Padmaavat

The Holi scene in Padmavat is shot in a very sensuous setting and is performed with gusto. The festival marks the turn of events that prompted Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) to change his strategy and seek peace with the Rajputs, leading to a shocking turn of faith for both sides. Their diplomatic moves were disguised as a symbol of mutual understanding and friendship, so Khilji painted his face bright saffron to celebrate Holi with the Rajputs.

Toilet Ek Prem Katha

In Toilet: A Prem Katha song “Gori Tu Lath Maar” Lath Maar is a symbol of Holi, played mainly in Mathura Vrindavan. In the film, as Jaya (Bhumi Pednekar) leaves Keshav and goes to her maternal home, Keshav (Akshay Kumar) comes and tries to lure his back, only to be beaten with sticks. Now, according to legend, Lord Krishna was also driven away by Radha’s female friends when he came to their village to play Holi with them.

Ram Leela

Goliyon Ki Raasleela Mein Holi: Ram-Leela gives the lead characters a chance to do something they would not have done otherwise. During Holi celebrations in the film, the lead pair is seen spreading colors on each other. The electrifying chemistry between Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone leaves the atmosphere emotionally charged and the two, who belong to opposing families, become intimate. After this sequence the song Lahu Mouth Lag Gaya Hai adds to the drama.

Raanjhanaa

Aanand L Rai’s Raanjhanaa marked Dhanush’s Bollywood debut and how well it was a treat for the film-goers. A moment in the film where Sonam Kapoor painted Dhanush with Holi colors was adorable. The scene was shot as a part of the song – Raanjhanaa, and Dhanush’s portrayal of an unrequited lover believing that the love of his life is painting his face was awe-inspiring.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani

Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a blockbuster. Everything about the film was perfect – including the songs. One of the chartbuster songs of the film was Holi song ‘Balam Pichkari’. It is one of the most popular Bollywood songs for the festival of Holi till date. In the film, Naina (Deepika Padukone) is seen dancing happily to the tune of this song, losing herself. The song also shows a change in Dipika’s character as she falls in love with Bunny (Ranbir).
