Spain, who finished third in Pool D behind England and India, dominated the match with a lot of penetration in the circle but the dashing Malaysian counter-attacks were impressive.

With both sides goalless at half-time, Faizal Saari put Malaysia ahead in the 35th minute but quick goals from Marc Miralles (41st) and Javier Gispert (42nd) put Spain ahead 2–1.

In the penalty shootout, it was 3–3 after the first set of five players each took their shots. Firhan Ashari, Faizal Saari and Suhaimi Shahmi Irfan scored for Malaysia, while Merhan Jalil and Shelo Silverius missed the target. Marc Miralles, Bonastre Jordi and Gispert Javier scored for Spain while Alvaro Iglesias and Marc René failed to find the net.
