Hockey India announces 20-man Indian women’s hockey team for FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup

Hockey India The 18-member Indian women’s hockey team was on Tuesday selected for the FIH Women’s Hockey World The Cup to be held in the Netherlands and Spain from 1 July to 17 July 2022. The 20-member team includes goalkeeper Savita and Bichu Devi Kharibam. Defenders Deep Grace Ekka, Gurjit Kaur, Nikki Pradhan, Udita have been named along with midfielders Nisha, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, Monica, Neha, Jyothi, Navjot Kaur, Sonika and Salima Tete.

The forward line features the very experienced Vandana Katariya, Lalremsiami, Navneet Kaur and Sharmila Devi while talented young stars Akshata Abaso Dhekale and Sangita Kumari have been named as replacement players.

In the previous edition of the prestigious quadrennial event held in London, the Indian team advanced to the quarter-finals, but lost to Ireland in a shootout after a 0-0 stalemate in regulation time. Ireland, who beat India 3-1 in a shootout, played in the final of the World Cup and ended their campaign with a silver medal.

Speaking about the team selection, head coach Janke Schopmann said, “We have selected the best team for the World Cup. It is a mix of experience and young talent who have shown great promise when given opportunities against top teams in the FIH Pro League.”

“Except Rani, who has still not fully recovered from injury rehabilitation, the team has all the players who were part of the Olympic campaign with the inclusion of Jyothi and Sonika, who did well in their roles when given the opportunity. The Indian team will play their group stage matches in Amstelveen, Netherlands, and if they finish at the top of the group, they will also play in the quarterfinals in Amstelveen, before the team advances to the semi-finals in the knockout stage and final base qualification in Teresa, Spain.
