Delhi to shut down all single-use plastic units from July 1

Officials said the Delhi Environment Department will launch a drive from July 1 to ensure compliance with the ban on 19 identified single use plastic (SUP) items and to shut down all manufacturers, suppliers, stockists, dealers and sellers who violate the orders. Identified SUP items include earbuds, plastic sticks for balloons, flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol), plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, straws, trays, wrapping or packaging film. , invitation cards, cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns, and stirrers.

“We have issued strict instructions to manufacturers, stockists, suppliers and distributors of single-use plastic items to ensure a zero inventory of 19 SUP items. Within the first week of July, those who do not maintain a zero inventory will be shut down. Will be done,” said a senior government official. Regular inspections would be conducted to ascertain compliance by manufacturers, brand owners, suppliers and stockists registered with the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC), he said, adding that the government would ensure strict enforcement.

The official said that industrial areas and redevelopment areas are being inspected to identify and shut down units manufacturing illegal SUP items. The DPCC has asked Shriram Institute of Industrial Research to conduct a survey to identify litter hotspots in the city and quantify the production of plastic waste as it plans to phase out 19 SUP items by June 30. The deadline is near.

An official said the survey will cover all 11 districts of Delhi and will have to be completed within four months. The institute is entrusted with the task of surveying all the famous, prominent commercial establishments, malls, market places, shopping centres, cinema houses, restaurants, tourist places, places of worship, colleges, schools, office complexes, hospitals and other institutions.
