Hockey Belgium, India Sweep All Categories Unhappy With FIH Hockey Stars Awards

Hockey Belgium on Wednesday expressed disappointment over the results of the FIH Hockey Stars Awards 2020-21 after their men’s team won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics. Indian hockey stars won all the categories at the awards and Belgium finished runner-up in three categories. Athletes Gurjit Kaur (Best Player, Female), Harmanpreet Singh (Best Player, Male), Savita (Best Goalkeeper, Female), PR Sreejesh (Best Goalkeeper, Male), Sharmila Devi (Best Rising Star, Female) and Vivek Prasad (Best Players (Rising Star, men) as well as the coaches of India women’s team, Sjoerd Marin (NED) and India men’s team, Graham Reid (AUS), garnered the most votes in their respective categories.

Hockey Belgium made a post on social media stating their disappointment, saying it was a “failure of the voting system”. He said he would work with the world governing body to create a “fair” system.

“Hockey Belgium is very disappointed with the result of the @FIH_Hockey Star Awards. A gold-winning team with multiple nominees in all categories, but not winning a single award, reflects the failure of the voting system. We will work with FIH to ensure a better arrangement in the future.”

The Netherlands, which won the women’s event, were runners-up in only two categories.

With the FIH Hockey Stars Award not being held in 2020 due to the impact of the COVID-19 global health pandemic on the international calendar, this year’s awards cover the period from January 2020 until the conclusion of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. The voting process began on 23 August and ended on 15 September 2021. The votes of the national associations – represented by their respective national captains and coaches – counted for 50% of the overall result, while fans and players (25%) as well as the media (25%) voted. the other half votes.
