Sambalpur: Additional spillway project, which will increase the discharge of flood water Hirakudo Dam, the fire is hanging. This project has not seen any progress after Tata Projects age groupTurkey, which was entrusted with the construction work, withdrew in the middle of the project.
Tata Projects and AGE Group started work on the additional spillway in January 2019, estimated at Rs 369.53 crore. He started excavation work for the spillway and excavated about 4 lakh cubic meters of soil. However, in February 2020, Tata Projects and its affiliate AGE Group wrote to the government and withdrew from the project on the grounds that the government was delaying handing over the site for construction work. There has been no progress on the project after that.
Spillway Division, Hirakud Dam Project Executive Engineer, Himanshu Mishra said, “After the withdrawal of the Tata project and age group, a proposal was sent to the government to float a fresh tender for it. A new tender will be floated after the proposal is approved by the government. Before that some legal issues have to be resolved.
Official sources said the length of the proposed additional spillway dam would be 91 metres. There will be five sluice gates. The proposed spillway channel will emerge from near Gandhi Minar on the left dam of Hirakud Dam reservoir and join Mahanadi river near Jawahar Udyan.
central water commission (CWC) Recommended to increase the flood drainage capacity of the dam keeping in view the climate change, climate change and possible maximum flood. At present, there are 98 gates including 64 sluice gates and 34 crest gates to release the flood water from Hirakud Dam.
Now about 15 lakh cusecs of water is released from 98 gates at a time. With the construction of additional spillway, the drainage capacity of Hirakud Dam will increase to 18 lakh cusecs.
