Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu on Monday said that a scheme to provide education loan at one per cent interest to poor students to help them pursue higher and professional studies would be launched in the current financial year. The state government has proposed Rs 200 crore under the ‘Mukhyamantri Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana’, which aims to provide education to underprivileged children (family income less than Rs 3 lakh per annum) through financial institutions or banks at an interest rate of Re 1. To provide loan. per cent, he said in a statement. The loan will help students cover tuition, accommodation, books and other allied expenses associated with their education.

The scheme covers a number of professional courses, including Engineering, Medical, Management, ITI to PhD courses, Polytechnic, B Pharmacy, Nursing, General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM).

“The main objective of the scheme is to ensure that no poor child in the state is deprived of higher and professional education due to lack of financial resources,” the statement said.

Sukhu said that the one per cent interest rate is meant to inculcate a sense of responsibility among the beneficiaries so that they are motivated to achieve their goals. He also said that 20,000 meritorious girl students above 18 years of age studying in government institutions would be provided a subsidy of Rs 25,000 to buy electric scooties.

This step will not only encourage girl students to pursue higher education but will also help develop Himachal Pradesh as a “Green State”.
