The total claims raised by private contractors in disputes in highway projects undertaken by NHAI are estimated to be around Rs 1 lakh crore and the counterclaims of NHAI are around Rs 33,000 crore. The newly constituted panel has been constituted following the direction of the Ministry of Finance to put in place a mechanism for all ministries and government entities to avoid the tendency to challenge all arbitral awards.
