High court sought report on removal of Manglahat market, but traders were not in favor of removal

A case is pending in the Calcutta High Court for the last two years regarding Mangalhat market of Howrah Maidan. A few days ago, due to the closure of this market due to the situation of Kovid, there was a lot of activity among the traders. However, later the Howrah administration directed to open the market in protest against the movement. However, the matter in the Calcutta High Court is primarily about shifting this market.

A PIL has been filed in the Calcutta High Court in 2020. The matter came up in the division bench of Chief Justice Prakash Srivastava on Tuesday. The Calcutta High Court has directed the Howrah Municipality to submit a report within the next three weeks. The matter will come up again in the next 4 weeks.

Ambuja Sharma had filed a public interest litigation seeking removal of Asia’s biggest cap from the Howrah ground. He is a resident of Howrah. He said that there are many government buildings in Howrah Maidan Chowk. There are hospitals, there are courts. Due to overcrowding in the market, people face difficulty in commuting. So this market should be removed from there.

Sujoy Chakraborty, chairman of the Board of Administration of Howrah Municipality, said, ‘This market is completely following the rules. Along with this, the traders of the market themselves are spreading awareness about Corona. However, he did not want to say anything about the market going forward. He said that action would be taken after seeing the directions of the High Court.

However, the traders of Mangalhat are not in favor of shaking the market. They want this market to be in Howrah ground.
