Hero stone found near Tirupur | Coimbatore News – Times of India

COIMBATORE: A hero stone sculpture dating back to the 11th century AD has been discovered recently by a group of researchers in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu.
A team of researchers from Tirupur-based Virarajendran Archaeological and Historical Research Centre found the hero stone during fieldwork in Chinnaputhur village on August 14.
Centre’s director S Ravikumar said, “The hero stone was located near the highway connecting Dharapuram and Pollachi. It measures 50 cm in length and 40 cm in width. On the hero stone, the two heroes were carved magnificently. The first hero holds the bow in his left hand and the arrow in his right hand. The second hero holds the spear in his right hand and a shield in his left hand.”
There were no inscriptions on the hero stone, he said. Based on their appearance, the hero stone is believed to be dating back to the early 11th century AD.
“The heroes wear kundalam-type ornament on their ears and kandugai and sarappalli-type ornaments around their neck, tholvalai and virakkappu on their hands. They are depicted wearing dress in the middle part of the body,” he added.
