HAVERI: The only Covid-19 patient at Byadgi taluk hospital walked out on Wednesday after fully recovered Breakdown District without any active case. According to the daily bulletin of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Haveri is now a green zone, the second district in Karnataka after Gadag.
The first Covid-19 case in Haveri was reported on May 4, 2020, but in the coming months, it had 21 patients, mostly migrants who had returned home from neighboring Maharashtra and other states. However, the second wave of the pandemic was an entirely different horror story. Within four months from February this year, the district recorded over 10,000 cases and a fatality rate rising to 2.9%, the highest in the state.
The cases started dwindling as the second wave subsided and the last positive case was reported on October 31 this year. Now, all designated government COVID hospitals, COVID care centers and private hospitals that treat infected people do not have any COVID patients.
District Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Shettinavar and District Health Officer Dr HS Raghavendraswamy lauded the efforts of all the personnel of the district administration in helping tackle the pandemic.
Shettinavar underlined the efforts of the Health and Family Welfare Department and the police personnel in the district. “Going forward, we have to be more cautious as we cannot predict what might happen. However, we are ready to face any challenge.”
Mohamed Illuminating, Zilla Panchayat CEO, said adherence to safety measures, close monitoring of primary and secondary contacts, regular screening, and strict enforcement of COVID appropriate behavior were among the reasons for the district’s successful fight against the pandemic.
“The vaccination coverage of the first dose has crossed over 85%, which has also helped in containing the spread of novel coronavirus in the district,” Roshan said. “The people of the district should also be commended for their cooperation in this challenging time.”
Doctor Ravi MalladadiThe president of the IMA Haveri unit said vaccination and herd immunity are the main reasons for Haveri becoming a green zone again, but cautioned that precautions should be taken to avoid a third wave. “The district administration should mandatorily take precautions like wearing masks and maintaining social distancing in public places,” he said.
