Have you ever wondered why there is an ‘X’ mark on the last compartment of Indian Railways trains? here is the reason

There is always something very fascinating about trains and trips. No? There are some signs and signals inside and outside the train. The meanings of most of them may not be known to everyone. Whether you are a frequent traveler or not, you must have noticed the letter X or the cross mark on the rear of the last compartment of the train. If you haven’t looked carefully yet, you might want to take a look the next time you visit the railway station.

For those who have already seen such a mark and are wondering why it stays behind the last compartment of the train, here is some understanding. Usually the X is painted bright yellow or white on the rear last bogie of passenger trains operating in India.

Also, if you look carefully, you will also find the letters LV written with a cross mark. The word LV denotes the last vehicle. It is also a small board sign that is highlighted black on yellow and is usually attached to the rear of the vehicle. A red light is available just below the letter X and this is an important element to focus on.

There is an important reason for its presence and that too in the last compartment of the train. The X mark is highlighted on the last wagon of a train with a mission to avoid an accident. This helps in finding out that the one which is marked is the last coach of that train. This sign also helps to indicate to employees that if the box with the X mark is not marked on the rear of the train, it is in an emergency. There is a chance of a coach getting into an accident when it separates from the train.

The guard on duty to flag off the rail crossing sees an X mark to confirm that all the coaches of that train are connected. At night, when it is dark and the signal is not very prominent, the red light within the radius of the mark helps to determine the last coach.

When the mark and the light is not reflected in its normal tendency, it alerts the railway staff and authority that the train is in trouble. It protects the passengers and the people around from any fatal incident or accident.
