Haryana Congress demands judicial inquiry into lathi charge on farmers

A delegation of Congress MLAs on Tuesday met Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, demanding a judicial inquiry into the lathi-charge on farmers and requested him not to give his assent to the Land Acquisition Bill recently passed by the state assembly. Meanwhile, another party delegation submitted a memorandum to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Delhi against the lathi charge on farmers. In another development, the Haryana Chief Secretary on Tuesday sought a detailed report from the Deputy Commissioner of Karnal after protesters blocked a national highway and police used force to disperse them.

On August 28, the state police had lathi-charged a group of farmers who blocked traffic on a highway on their way to Karnal in Haryana to protest against a BJP meeting. The Congress delegation led by Leader of Opposition in the state assembly Bhupinder Singh Hooda also lathi-charged. A video of an officer submitted to the Governor, in which he is seen asking the police to break the heads of farmers, according to a statement, submitted a memorandum to Hooda demanding a judicial inquiry by a sitting High Court judge or a retired person. repeated. Judge in the lathi charge incident in which around 10 farmers were injured.

On the issue of Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2021, the Congress delegation urged the Governor not to give his assent and send it back to the Haryana Assembly for reconsideration. Hooda had earlier said that the Haryana government had dealt another blow to farmers’ rights through the bill, with the Congress demanding that it be either withdrawn or sent to a select committee.

This bill is anti-farmer, anti-poor and undemocratic. Hooda told the Governor that the bill was passed in haste without a detailed discussion in the House. Hooda said the new bill will harm the interests of farmers who are already agitating against the Centre’s agricultural laws for the last nine months.

He claimed that the provisions protecting the interests of farmers have been removed. Hooda said that all the provisions of the old Land Acquisition Act such as the process of giving consent of farmers, prior intimation and the process of giving residential plots with compensation in lieu of land have been removed in the new bill.

Earlier, speaking to reporters here before meeting the governor, the former chief minister, while remarking on the completion of 2,500 days of the BJP-led government, alleged that both the terms of the BJP government have been full of failures. Then what is the government celebrating? Is the government celebrating the fact that it has made Haryana number one in unemployment, crime, drugs, scams, farmer protests and pollution? Is the government celebrating the fact that it beat up farmers with sticks? Is it being celebrated that the farmer is sitting on the streets today? Is it a celebration of the fact that today the state has a debt of Rs 2.5 lakh crore?

Meanwhile, another delegation of Haryana Congress leaders led by party general secretary Vivek Bansal, who is in charge of Haryana affairs in AICC, submitted a memorandum to the NHRC in Delhi regarding the lathi charge. Bansal told the media persons that his demand is that the officer who had done such barbaric lathi charge on the farmers should be suspended.

He said that the government should publicly apologize for this act and find a way to fulfill the demands of the farmers. Bansal said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is giving the slogan of ‘self-reliant’, but on the other hand the government is ordering lathi-charge on the farmers making the country self-reliant.

Vivek Bansal was accompanied by Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja, Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Singh Hooda and other senior leaders, including Kiran Choudhary and Ajay Singh Yadav.
