It rained runs on Wednesday in the first ODI of the 3-match series between India and New Zealand in Hyderabad. Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian batsman to score a double century and also the youngest male player to do so. Later, the crowd witnessed Michael Bracewell’s brilliant 78-ball 140 which almost took the game away from India’s grasp. But it was local boy Mohammad Siraj who turned the tide in India’s favor with a four-wicket haul as the hosts won the encounter by 12 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

Apart from the run-fest, the other major highlight of the game was a questionable umpiring that cost India the wicket of Hardik Pandya. The all-rounder was trying to cut the ball from Darryl Mitchell towards third man but missed because of the extra bounce on offer. The ball went straight to Latham’s gloves but the bails fell, giving what appeared to be a clean bowled dismissal. TV replays showed that the ball went to the keeper without making contact with bat or stump but took the wickets after hitting Latham’s gloves.

While every spectator was sure that Pandya had survived, the third umpire’s decision took them all by surprise. The all-rounder himself was surprised to be given out in such a peculiar manner.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer took to Twitter, commenting strongly on the turn of events. He said that the all-rounder was robbed by the third umpire’s decision.

“1. Clear distinction between ball and bails.

2. The ball is inside the gloves, the bails are not yet lit.

3. Bell lit after brushing with gloves.

Hardik looted there. #INDvNZ,” Jaffer tweeted.

Former head coach Ravi Shastri, who was commentating at the time, seemed unconvinced, saying the ball went at least ‘an inch’ above the wicket.

“Oh, it’s a given! Daryl Mitchell should be happy. Really happy, because if you take a look again at where the keeper’s gloves are, where the ball is as it crosses the stumps, it’s like The ball seems to have been at least an inch, inch and a half above the stumps,” Shastri said on air.
