New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday cited the Supreme Court’s critical remarks against Teesta Setalvad, alleging that the Congress and its president Sonia Gandhi were the “motivating force” behind the activist’s campaign against the then Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi in 2002. The BJP launched a scathing attack on Setalvad after he was taken into custody from Mumbai by the riots Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) and taken to Ahmedabad in connection with an FIR lodged against him in the Ahmedabad city crime branch. At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra mentioned that the apex court had named Setalvad while criticizing those responsible for “boiling the pot” for their hidden designs on the riots. The court had said that all those involved in the abuse of process need to be brought to justice.
The Supreme Court in its order on Friday dismissed a petition challenging the clean chit given by the SIT to the then Gujarat Chief Minister Modi and others in the 2002 Godhra riots case. Setalvad’s NGO had supported Zakia Jafri, who had filed a petition during their legal battle alleging a larger conspiracy behind the riots. Jafri’s husband and former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri was killed during the riots.
The Supreme Court spoke of a devious ploy to “boil the pot” for the inverted design. It had also said that disgruntled officials of the Gujarat government need to be brought to book and proceed in accordance with law to create sensation by making false revelations.
Patra, citing records, said that Setalvad and his NGO were allegedly behind preparing some gruesome details about what happened to some of the victims of the riots, which later turned out to be false. They have also been accused of misappropriation and misuse of funds collected for the riot victims and for personal pleasure and comfort, he said.
The BJP spokesperson said the Congress-led UPA government, particularly its education ministry, had given Rs 1.4 crore to an NGO run by Setalvad, and used this money to campaign against Modi and “defame” India. was done for. “She was not alone.
