Gujarat: Exam for recruitment to the post of head clerk canceled after paper leak; main accused caught

Gujarat Government has recently canceled the written exam conducted for the recruitment of Head Clerk: question paper leak before examGujarat’s Minister of State for Home Harsh Sanghvi said this on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the police said that they have arrested the main accused in the case.

After a meeting with Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Sanghvi told reporters in Gandhinagar that the paper leak case would be heard in a fast track court. 88,000 candidates had appeared for it.

“A new examination will be conducted in March 2022 in a more transparent manner and using a different methodology. All those candidates who had filled the form for the previous exam will be considered eligible for the new exam.”

The written examination was conducted by Gujarat Subordinate Services Selection Board (GSSSB) for the recruitment of 186 Head Clerks on 12th December at various centers across the state in which around 88,000 candidates appeared for the examination. Meanwhile, Gandhinagar police on Monday night arrested Jayesh Patel (39), the main accused in the entire conspiracy behind the exam question paper leak.

Sabarkantha Superintendent of Police Neeraj Badgujar said that he was later handed over to the Sabarkantha police after an FIR was lodged with the Prantij police station there in connection with the crime. Two candidates, Ritesh Prajapati and Raunak Sadhu, who appeared in the examination, were also arrested by the Sabarkantha police on Monday night after obtaining the leaked paper from Jayesh Patel and his associates, the official said.

With this, 14 people have been arrested from different parts of the state so far in this case. He said an FIR was registered a week ago at the Prantij police station under sections 420 (cheating), 409 (criminal breach of trust) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

“Jayesh Patel is a native of Uncha village in Sabarkantha and was absconding after his name surfaced in the paper leak case. We have also arrested two candidates – Prajapati and Sadhu, who used the leaked paper. While Prajapati offered Rs 12 lakh, Sadhu agreed to pay Rs 5 lakh for the paper. However, the money was yet to be paid,” said the police officer. Two other persons – Deval Patel and Satish Patel – both linked to Jayesh Patel, are still absconding and police teams have been formed to nab them, They said.

Police investigation so far has revealed that Jayesh Patel and other accused persons allegedly managed to obtain question papers from the manager of a printing press ahead of the examination. He reportedly sold it to over 15 candidates and also helped them solve the paper at various places a day before the exam. The paper then reached various candidates, who were divided into three groups and taken to three different places near Prantij on 11 December, where Jayesh Patel and others solved the question paper.

The FIR states that on the day of the examination, the accused persons arranged for transport to drop these candidates to their respective examination centres. Notably, the issue of paper leak came to the fore a day after the exam was conducted when youth wing leader of Gujarat Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) unit Yuvraj Singh Jadeja alleged that the question paper was leaked ahead of the exam. As a proof, he had shared a picture of a notebook page containing handwritten answers to some questions asked in the exam.
