Greg Chappell expects Pat Cummins to be announced as Australia’s next Test captain

Former Australian cricketer Greg Chappell is hopeful that pacer Pat Cummins will be named Australia’s next Test captain. He said that apart from being the captain, Cummins has to take the responsibility of restoring confidence in Australian cricket along with the job.

Chappell’s remarks came after Australia began looking for a new Test captain after Tim Paine’s unintentional exit due to an off-field scandal, especially for the first Test starting in Brisbane only. There were 18 days left.

“Luckily, in Pat Cummins, they have an excellent candidate, ready to go. I expect Cummins to be announced as the 47th Australian men’s Test captain. Like Penn before him, Cummins will need to not only lead the team, but instill confidence in the role and Australian cricket again,” Chappell wrote in his column for the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday.

Chappell said that Cummins has an excellent cricketing mind and loves to talk through his performances.

“Pat is extremely intelligent, an excellent player and has an excellent cricketing mind, so he is ideal for the role. Also, he is not a lippy, preferring bat and ball to talk. Naturally athletic, a prolific fielder with a rocket arm, I hope he improves by leaps and bounds as a batsman with the responsibility of captaincy. He is easily the best No. 8 batsman in the world currently, but has been able to bat up a notch.

“The captain traditionally fields close to the wicket to control the proceedings. Cummins is such a prolific all-rounder that he can be close to his bowlers, rather than the fast bowlers usually favored. The crowd loves him and sees him for what he is – a cleanskin, who always has his heart out for Australia and a resilient chap who has taken up the challenges of injury with sheer perseverance, dedication and character.”

Appreciating what Cummins brings to the table, Chappell is concerned about his workload increasing manifold due to Test captaincy. In the 2019 Ashes in England, where Australia retained the urn in a 2-2 draw, Cummins played all five matches.

“My biggest fear? The workload, which could prevent him from playing a full, five-Test series without rest. So it will be interesting to see who is appointed his deputy. Cummins himself has to be given a judicious way.” One has to learn to use the ball and neither the over-ball nor the under-ball. It is important that the seniors of the team give him timely advice. When it comes to selecting the team for the upcoming series, it is all a matter for the selectors. And that puzzles.

The 73-year-old feels that with Cummins being an inexperienced captain, seniors like David Warner can help him in decision making.

“Obviously, there is a question mark about his lack of captaincy experience, but he has enough old hands around to help out when the need arises. David Warner, for example, has been an outstanding captain of his Twenty20 franchise in the high-pressure pan of the IPL, and even led them to tournament victories, so he can be relied upon to make constructive contributions.
