NOIDA: A speeding BMW fell off the Yamuna Expressway on Saturday morning, killing its driver and leaving his companion with serious injuries.
Police said the driver appeared to have lost control, and the car spun and bounced thrice before falling off the road into a field.
The accident happened near Galgotias University in the Dankaur police station area in Greater Noida. The car’s occupants, Bharat (21) and Gaurav, neighbours at Bahadurgarh in Haryana, were headed towards the Agra from Noida. Bharat was driving.
Police received information about the accident around 8.30am and rushed to the spot. “A BMW i8 with a Haryana registration number had fallen off the Yamuna expressway. The two occupants, Bharat and Gaurav, were rushed to Kailash Hospital, where doctors declared Bharat ‘brought dead’ while Gaurav is undergoing treatment,” Radha Raman Singh, SHO of Dankaur police station, said.
Eyewitnesses told police the car was moving at high speed. “The driver lost control of the car and hit the railing on the roadside. The car toppled three times before falling 20 feet into a field along the expressway,” Kumar said.
Police said six airbags opened after the accident. The car was almost completely destroyed.
“We had to use a cutter to bring Bharat and Gaurav out. While it was easier ro take out Gaurav, Bharat’s body was completely tangled. We have handed the body to his relatives,” the SHO said.
Sources in the police said Bharat was an engineering student in Delhi. His family owns a school in Bahadurgarh.
Dr Dinesh Sharma, director, Kailash Hospital, Greater Noida, said Gaurav was brought to the hospital around 9.10 am while Bharat was brought 20 minutes later. “Gaurav has a cervical injury but is stable. His relatives have moved him to another hospital in Vasant Kunj,” Sharma said.
According to data obtained from the Yamuna Expressway concessionaire, 420 accidents happened on the 165-km stretch last year, leaving 135 people dead and 949 injured. There were 509 accidents in 2020, with 128 killed and 1,013 injured, and 560 in 2019, with 195 killed and 1,302 injured.
Data provided by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority shows 45% of the accidents are due to drivers falling asleep at the wheel. Speeding and violation of traffic rules account for 19% and 11% of the expressway accidents, respectively. Stationary vehicles, tyre bursting, and drink driving are other causes.
