Governor allowed to read oath of MLAs

Speaker Biman Banerjee will administer the oath of office to the newly elected public representatives in Khardaha, Dinhata, Gosaba and Shantipur. Earlier, Raj Bhavan was informed that the Deputy Speaker would administer the oath to the four members of the newly elected Legislative Assembly. Then Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Governor changed his mind after talking to the Chief Minister. Such news has been received through sources. However, no one from the Raj Bhavan wanted to comment on the matter.

According to the constitution, newly elected members of the legislature are usually sworn in by the governor. However, the Constitution also states that the Governor can delegate the responsibility of administering the oath to someone else if he so desires. Initially it was thought that Speaker of the Legislative Assembly Biman Banerjee would administer the oath. It was told from the Raj Bhavan that the Deputy Chairman would administer the oath. In other words, Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar gave the task of reading to Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee.

State Council Minister Perth Chatterjee said, ‘Governor is not taking oath. How and where this will happen, we will decide for ourselves. Meanwhile, the correspondence of Raj Bhavan with the Council office has also started. The matter has been conveyed by the Governor for consideration of the matter.

According to the information, a few days ago the Speaker of the Assembly was seen speaking against the Governor. Maybe that’s why the governor would have taken such a decision. It is noteworthy that Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar administered the oath of MLA to Mamata Banerjee after her victory in Bhawanipur by-election. At that time a letter was sent from the Raj Bhavan to the Legislative Assembly Secretariat in which it was told that the right of the Governor to administer the oath of office has been cancelled.
