Government appoints committee to revisit EWS quota criteria; Former Finance Secretary Ajay Pandey to key panel

The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment on Tuesday announced that the Center has constituted a three-member committee to review the criteria for reservation for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category. The government had last week informed the Supreme Court that it had taken a considered decision to revisit the norms.

The members of the committee are former finance secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) member secretary VK Malhotra and principal economic advisor to the government Sanjay Sanyal. The committee has been asked to complete its work within three weeks.

The committee will be headed by former finance secretary Ajay Bhushan Pandey, which has been requested to complete the work within three weeks. The committee will have to review the criteria for determining the EWS category keeping in view the observations of the Supreme Court dated October 21, 2021, the statement said.

The announcement to appoint a committee and revisit the EWS reservation criteria comes after the intervention of the Supreme Court. The SC is hearing petitions challenging a government notice issued in July, which provides for 10 per cent EWS quota in NEET admissions.
