Govardhan Puja 2021: Date, Pooja Method, Shubh Muhurta and Significance During Diwali

Diwali is one of the happiest festivals and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by Hindus. The festival lasts for five days and each day has its own significance. Govardhan Puja or Annakoot Puja, as it is popularly known, takes place a day after Diwali. The first three days of the 5-day festival are all about praying for wealth, prosperity and well being of the family, the fourth or Govardhan Puja is celebrated to thank the deities for their blessings and favors.

In some places, this day is celebrated as Gudi Padwa. The newly wed girls are invited to enjoy the feast and enjoy the festivities at their maternal home along with their husbands.

This year Govardhan Puja will be celebrated on 5th November. According to the Hindu calendar, Govardhan Puja will take place on the first lunar day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik.

Govardhan Puja Pratahkal Muhurta is from 06:35 AM to 08:47 AM, while Govardhan Puja Evenkala Muhurta is from 03:21 PM to 05:33 PM.

Importance of Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja marks the day when Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill to save people from the wrath of Devraj Indra. Legends say that Krishna raised the Govardhan hill on his little finger while the people of Gokul took refuge under it. Govardhan Puja is performed to worship and please Lord Krishna with Chappan (56) Bhog.

HOW TO DO GOVARDHAN PUJA VIDHI?

Govardhan Puja celebrations are associated with traditions. On this day devotees make a heap of cow dung in the form of a hill. The hill represents the Govardhan mountain and people decorate it with flowers and kumkum.

Devotees perform ‘Parikrama’ around the hills of cow dung. Govardhan Parvat is worshiped for the safety and happiness of his family.

The Govardhan Puja ritual also includes people bathing a cow or a bull. They also worship him with saffron and garland.

Annakoot Puja is an integral part of Govardhan Puja. In this festival, Chappan Bhog is offered to Lord Krishna followed by Govardhan Aarti. Annakoot Prasad is shared with family and friends.
