Google said earlier this year that it would make two-factor authentication live on all accounts by default. Now, the company is rolling out the mandate, where the company will do auto enrollment of around 15 crores Google Accounts for two-factor authentication. The process is currently underway for the first wave of properly configured accounts. The company is informing users via email that from November 9, 2-Step Verification will be activated automatically on their account.
This is only for accounts that haven’t already signed up for two-factor authentication. Google says that “appropriately configured” accounts will be enrolled automatically. This means that accounts that have a phone number or recovery email attached will automatically be secured through 2-factor authentication. Users can find out if their account is eligible by performing a security check on their Google Account.
According to Google, signing in with both a password and a second step on your phone gives an extra layer of security and protects accounts from password theft scams.
The company has started sending mails to the affected users to alert them about the development. According to reports, the company is giving information to the users about 7 days before enrolling.
If you want to activate two-factor authentication on Google, you no longer need to wait for this change to start rolling in. Users can simply go to Google > choose account > the protection > sign in to google > 2-Step Verification.
If you don’t want two-factor authentication and it’s turned on automatically for your Google Account, you can turn it off. However, Google warns against this as it makes your account less secure.
