Goan cricket has potential, needs little push, says new coach Mansur | Goa News – Times of India

Panaji: The Goa Cricket Association has appointed Karnataka‘s Mansur Ali Khan as the head coach of the men’s senior team for this season.
Khan follows in the footsteps of his former state partner, Dodda Ganesh, under whom Goa topped the Plate Group in the Ranji Trophy.
The 50-year-old is known for his role as a bowling coach for Karnataka in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons where they went on to complete the famous treble of winning Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy in both seasons.
“I am familiar with Goa as I had conducted a camp for GCA in 2010 and Amogh Desai, Darshan Misal and Suyash Prabhudessai were young. I know them personally for the last few years. I have also been a scout for Punjab Kings and have seen Goa do really well in the shorter format of white ball. There is great potential and they need a little push to register impressive results,” said Khan.
Khan coached the UP team from 2017-19 before moving to the National Cricket Academy as a bowling coach under Rahul Dravid. He toured with India A team to New Zealand in January 2020.
Khan will join the team in Delhi for pre-season. Goa will play a few practice matches before moving to Mohali to take part in the All India JP Atray Memorial one-day cricket tournament.
“We had received seven to eight applications. Going through it, Khan’s resume was the best as we are not only looking at the season but also grooming fast bowlers for the future. With his exploits at NCA and a good record as a UP coach, I am sure he will take the Goa in the right direction,” said GCA secretary Vipul Phadke.
With BCCI announcing India’s domestic season for the 2022-23 season, Goa will feature in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament (starting October 11), Vijay Hazare ODI tournament (November 12) and Ranji Trophy (December 13).
Goa are drawn in Group B for the Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, along with Hyderabad, Punjab, Delhi, UP, Pondicherry, Tripura and Manipur.
Teams like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Bihar and Arunachal will clash with Goa in the Vijay Hazare ODI.
In the Ranji Trophy, Goa are drawn in Elite Group C with teams like Karnataka, Kerala, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Services, Rajasthan and Puducherry.
All eyes will be on Goa’s performance as Sachin Tendulkar’s son, Arjun, will be playing for the state. The other two professional players in the team — Eknath Kerkar and Siddhesh Lad – are also from Mumbai.
