A group of Congress leaders from Porvorim assembly constituency tendered their resignations on Friday morning, news agency PTI reported.

The group, backed by Independent MLA Rohan Khunte, has claimed that the Congress is not serious about contesting the early 2022 assembly elections.

“The Congress party is not taking interest in seriously contesting the upcoming Goa election. It is a non-start because of the attitude of some of its leaders,” Gupesh Naik, a former district panchayat member who led the group from Porvorim, told the media, as reported by PTI.

In another setback for the opposition party, its senior leader from South Goa, Moreno Rebello, also tendered his resignation.

According to Rebelo’s resignation letter, he was upset after the party declared the sitting MLA from Curtorim constituency Alekso Reginaldo Lourenco as a “candidate”, although “he was working against the part”.

“Alexo Reginaldo Lourenco, who has not participated in any party activity for the past four and a half years and on the contrary has only abused party leaders and himself, acted against the official candidate of Curtorim in the recently held district panchayat election , Rebelo wrote in a letter addressed to Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar, promoted as working president of the party and announced as a candidate by senior leaders during a conference held recently. has gone.

The resignations started following differences in the Congress over the nature of its understanding with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) for the upcoming assembly elections.

AICC Goa election in-charge P Chidambaram on Thursday said the GFP had only extended support to the Congress, refusing to call it an alliance at this stage.

Interacting with the media in Panaji, Chidambaram had said that by now he had a party leader, Vijay Sardesai, who had come to Delhi, who had said, “To defeat the BJP, my party supports the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi said that we accept the support. All other details are to be discussed further.”

On the other hand, senior Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao has proposed a meeting between GFP chief Vijay Sardesai and Chodankar on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Goa today as the Congress faces a fresh crisis in the coastal state.

During her day-long visit, she is scheduled to address various events and interact with youth and women.
