Goa bound train derails in Ratnagiri tunnel; passenger safe

New Delhi: The Hazrat Nizamuddin to Goa Rajdhani Express train derailed inside the Karbude tunnel near Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra in the early hours of Saturday. However, the officials did not report any casualties and said that all the passengers were safe.

The derailment was caused by a boulder that fell on the track. The accident site is 325 km away from Mumbai.

The train – 02414 – was on its way to Goa’s Margao when it derailed inside the Karbude tunnel, about 325 km from Mumbai, a spokesperson of the Konkan Railway, which operates the route, told PTI.

“The engine front wheel of Rajdhani Superfast train derailed in Karbude tunnel located between Ukshi and Bhoke stations in Ratnagiri area of ​​Konkan Railway,” the official was quoted as saying by PTI.

A Rail Maintenance Vehicle (RMV) reached the site and an Accident Relief Medical Van (ARMV) again with railing equipment left for the site from Ratnagiri for restoration work. Along with officials of the Konkan Railway, who have reached the site to clear the line, the official informed.

The Konkan Railway operates a 756-km-long route between Roha near Mumbai and Thokur near Mangalore that spans three states – Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka. It is considered one of the challenging terrains, with many rivers, valleys and mountains in its path.
