GITAM Bags IGBC Green Champion Award for Encouraging Green Education Initiatives

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has conferred the Green Champion Award to GITAM (Deemed to be University) for being the ‘Institution promoting IGBC Green’. education Program through Green Built Environment Course for M.Arch students at GITAM’.

The award comes in recognition of GITAM’s efforts in adopting sustainable goals and its ability to inspire others, thereby taking forward the green building movement in India. In the IGBC program of the 20th Green Building Congress held in Hyderabad, Professor K.K., Director, GITAM School of Architecture. Mohan received the Green Champion Award.

Following an MoU signed by GITAM and IGBC earlier this year, a course titled Green Built Environment was started as a subject of study for M.Arch students at GITAM. A course in Sustainable Architecture is already being taught at the institute since 2017, cementing GITAM’s position as a leader in the adoption and promotion of green practices in architecture. GITAM has an active student chapter of IGBC since 2016 which has been regularly organizing seminars, competitions and other awareness programs on adopting sustainable practices.

Till date more than 40 students have been trained by GITAM School of Architecture to become IGBC Accredited Professionals and 28 faculty members are IGBC Accredited Professionals.

Accepting the award, Director, School of Architecture, Professor K. Mohan explained, “We aim to reach net zero gradually and to meet this, several green initiatives are being promoted on the university campus such as the use of innovative energy in waste management, solar panels, water use downsizing technology, energy-efficient lighting fixtures and many more.

On-campus vegetation, which includes various trees, ground covers and shrubs, has been a part of his research into how vegetation can reduce urban heat. The findings have been presented in several international research papers and conferences. They have also started working on a unique project for geo-tagging all the plants and trees in the campus, which will help the visitors and students to get acquainted with the different flora in the university campus.
