Girl dies due to cyber attack on hospital in US, claims lawsuit

Cyber attacks have become quite common these days, affecting many global groups including Microsoft recently. Although in most cases cyber attackers demand money as ransom, we rarely hear of casualties. However, a baby girl died allegedly of severe brain injury in a ransomware attack on a US hospital. According to the lawsuit filed by the mother and reported by the Wall Street Journal, the hospital was unable to function due to the cyberattack, which later led to a lack of child care.

The lawsuit by the child’s mother, Tirani Kidd, also states that Springhill Medical Center did not inform her that the servers were down due to the cyber attack. The incident took place in July 2019, but the child died in April 2020. Kidd initially sued the hospital in January 2020, then amended the lawsuit following the death of her daughter. The lawsuit alleges, “On July 9, 2019, Springhill Memorial Hospital suffered a serious ransomware attack that blocked and encrypted the hospital’s computer systems, network systems, and data. On the same day, Springhill Memorial Hospital reported to media outlets.” reported that she experienced a ‘network event’, but the issue had not ‘affected patient care’.

Kidd claims she missed important tests at the hospital when she arrived to give birth. Tests showed the umbilical cord wrapped around the baby’s neck, causing brain damage and causing him to die nine months later. The lawsuit also notes that had Kidd been informed of the cyberattack, she would have chosen to give her child elsewhere.

The case also highlights the first incident of death due to the ‘Teerani Kid v Springhill Hospitals’ cyber attack. Earlier, the death of a patient after a ransomware attack at a hospital in Düsseldorf, Germany in September 2020 was considered the first death due to a ransomware attack.
