Ghulam Nabi Azad, G-23 members will meet party president Sonia Gandhi today

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad and some members of G-23 group will meet party chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi today.

“After talking to Sonia Gandhi, we will fix the meeting (with Azad and other G-23 leaders) and inform about the same,” Rahul Gandhi was quoted as saying by ANI sources.

Earlier, only Azad was scheduled to meet Sonia Gandhi.

The meeting is taking place in the backdrop of the Congress’s poor performance in the 2022 state assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur and Goa.

Former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda met Rahul Gandhi after a group meeting at Azad’s residence in New Delhi on Thursday. He was the first leader of the group to approach the Congress High Command.

During the meeting, both the leaders discussed the proposal taken by the G-23 group.

Hooda suggested the election of the Congress Working Committee and demanded the appointment of an experienced person for North India. He also highlighted the need for collective decision-making and urged to know who in the party is taking decisions, ANI reported, citing sources.

G-23 is a rebel group consisting of leaders like Manish Tewari, Kapil Sibal, Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad. He is also a member of Congress Working Committee (CWC).

The rebel group was formed in August 2020 after a group of leaders wrote a letter to party president Sonia Gandhi demanding reforms for the Congress party’s poor electoral performance.

The performance of the Congress in all the five states was very poor. In Uttar Pradesh, it could get only 2 seats in the 403-member assembly, while in Punjab it came down to 18 seats.
