GHMC emphasizes on eco-friendly Ganesh idols

Hyderabad: With artisans busy making idols for the Ganesh Chaturthi festival that begins on August 31, efforts have been initiated by the city administration to promote eco-friendly idols and immerse idols made of plaster of Paris and synthetic colours.

In order to encourage idols that do not pollute water bodies upon immersion, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to set an example by installing clay Ganesh idols at prominent places besides its regional premises. and circle office.

Also, details of clay idol makers in the city along with their contact numbers will be displayed near the idols. The idea behind this move is to widely disseminate information about artisans making eco-friendly Ganesh idols to citizens and those setting up pandals.

While a Ganesh idol made of clay was installed at the GHMC LB Nagar zonal office on Tuesday, an idol is expected to be installed at the Secunderabad zonal office in the next few days.

With Ganesh Chaturthi festivities commencing on August 31, the civic body has decided to coordinate in advance with the organizers of Ganesh pandals and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) earlier this month and guide them towards eco-friendly idols . Along with this, efforts will also be made to make the idol makers aware about the harm caused to the environment by PoP and synthetic colours.

“With the help of RWAs, elected representatives and NGOs, we will conduct an awareness campaign to discourage the use of idols made of plaster of Paris,” said a GHMC official.

Apart from GHMC, Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) will also distribute clay idols ahead of the festival and clay idol makers will also be encouraged by the state government.

The official said a strict vigil would be kept on this year in Hussain Sagar and other water bodies where idols are immersed.

“Currently, we are working towards spreading awareness about the harmful effects of water bodies on immersion of POP idols,” the official said.
