German Chancellor’s India Visit: Talks on Climate Change, Green Industries Likely, Says Official

German Foreign and Security Policy Adviser to the German Chancellor, Dr. Jens Plattner, said at a press conference that the visit would be a step towards a significant deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

Visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz India A top official said on Monday that the two countries will discuss cooperation in areas such as climate change, green industries and migration later this month.

German Foreign and Security Policy Adviser to the German Chancellor, Dr. Jens Plattner, said at a press conference that the visit would be a step towards a significant deepening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

“We consider India a partner of values… It is a democracy, we believe in respecting the voice of the people, the rule of law, human rights. We love working with India and consider it a cornerstone of our international relations.”

“Some of the areas of cooperation that will be discussed during the chancellor’s visit include climate change, transition of industries to green industries, hydrogen, migration and energy,” Plattner said.

Plattner had earlier in the day met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and discussed with him the strategic partnership between India and Germany. They also exchanged views on the situation in Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

The Chancellor’s visit is expected to begin on February 25.

This will be Scholz’s first visit to India after taking over as German Chancellor in December 2021 after Angela Merkel’s historic 16-year tenure at the top post.

In December, German Foreign Minister Annalena Bierbock paid a two-day visit to India, apparently to prepare for Scholz’s long-awaited visit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi And Chancellor Scholz held bilateral talks on November 16 in the Indonesian resort city of Bali on the sidelines of the G-20 summit.

The first meeting between the two leaders took place during Modi’s visit to Berlin on 2 May for the 6th Indo-German Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC).

Talking about the Russia-Ukraine conflict at the press conference, the German security adviser said that the war Russia is waging has global consequences. “A permanent member of the UNSC (United Nations Security Council) has violated the United Nations Charter,” Plotner said.

Emphasizing India’s role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he said that “the voice of New Delhi is heard very clearly in Moscow”.

Responding to a question about India-China border issues, Plattner said, they (Germany) view the situation with concern and “this is not an area where arms should speak.

Asked about the delay in issuing student visas to Indians, he said, “Indian students are welcome in Germany. We know the waiting time is long but the embassy is working double time on it.”
