The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition seeking postponement of the conduct of GATE 2022 exam. A division bench of Supreme Court Justices DY Chandrachud, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Vikramnath today, on February 3, 2022, on a petition filed by only a few candidates who had applied for the GATE exam, sought extension of the date of conduct of the examination amid the pandemic. It was quashed during the hearing.

After the decision of the Apex Court, now GATE 2022 exam will be conducted by IIT Kharagpur in offline mode according to the predetermined schedule from 5th February 2022.

Students had demanded postponement of the examination
The petition seeking to postpone the conduct of Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) in Engineering to be conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur was to be heard in the Supreme Court today i.e. on February 3, 2022. In this petition, it was demanded that in view of the situation of the epidemic, the conduct of the examination should be postponed.

Hearing ordered by the Supreme Court today
Advocate Pallav Mongia, appearing for the candidates in this petition, had requested the division bench for a surprise hearing of the petition. After this, the Supreme Court was ordered to hear it today.

No relaxation has been given in the matter of conduct of examination.
Candidates are demanding to postpone the conduct of this examination for almost 1 month. Following the outbreak of the third wave of COVID-19, further travel restrictions are being imposed in many cities and states. In view of these, many online campaigns have been run by the students. However, IIT Kharagpur has not given any relaxation in the matter of conducting the examination.
