Gargi Review: Sai Pallavi delivers strong performance in emotional courtroom drama on sexual harassment

The crime thriller ‘Gargi’ starring Sai Pallavi is based on the subject of child abuse. Directed by Gautham Ramachandran, Gargi, a courtroom and emotional drama, hit the big screen today, garnering rave reviews as well. Many viewers and film critics call it one of the best Tamil films of the year.

what is the film about?

In Gargi, Sai Pallavi plays the role of a school teacher. Her father is a security guard in an apartment. Four northerners gang-rape a girl living in that apartment, while Sai Pallavi’s father is also detained for the alleged crime. The protagonist’s attempt to prove his father’s innocence and set him free is the focus of the film.

However, Sai Pallavi loses her job after her father is taken into police custody. He has no money and no famous lawyer to represent his father in the case. ‘How Pallavi defended herself and saved her father under the circumstances’ director Gautham Ramachandran has shot it beautifully. Meanwhile, the biggest asset of this film will be that it takes the audience through the scenes, who committed the crime? Questions kept arising on the script of the entire film. All the scenes in Gargi are especially well designed for the film without any exaggeration. After all, the character of Sai Pallavi’s lawyer Kali Venkat also seems to strengthen the film. The character of the judge played by a person from the transgender community is also unique in this case.

Despite the fact that the film is billed as a child abuse criminal thriller, most of the scenes take place in a courtroom, without obliterating the essence of the film’s plot. The dialogues are written in a way that avoids getting monotonous, while in some scenes, Gargi can appear a bit extended and slow moving. Still, the film is undeniably strong.

The director’s achievement is that it convinces the audience that not only families with girls, but everyone should watch ‘Gargi’. The film highlights how challenging it is for women to be successful in society. Following in the footsteps of Jyothika-starrer Ponmagal Vandhal, Keerthy Suresh-starrer Sunny Kayidham, Sai Pallavi’s Gargi explores the topic of sexual harassment from a broader perspective.
