BERHAMPUR: Family members of a 34-year old man from Ganjam district, who was declared brain dead at a private hospital in Surat, Gujarat, donated his vital organs, helping save the lives of six patients.
Sushil Pradhan of Allapur village in Belaguntha block suffered a brain stroke in Surat on January 26. He was admitted to a private hospital there where he was declared brain dead a day later. His body arrived in his native village on Saturday evening for cremation.
“His heart, liver, kidney and corneas were removed and successfully transplanted to six different persons on Friday,” said Anil Sahu, brother of the deceased. Hospital authorities spoke to Sushil’s family members first before deciding to carry out the organ donation.
Donate Life, a local NGO in Surat which has been working in the field of organ donation for several years, convinced Sushil’s family members. “The heart transplantation was done at a hospital in Chennai, while both kidney and liver transplantation was done in Ahmedabad and the corneas were transplanted at a hospital in Surat,” said Nilesh Mandlewal of Donate Life,
“We salute the family members of the deceased for their decision to donate the vital organs after doctors declared him brain dead,” Mandlewal added.
“My brother is not among us, but some people will be able to live a better life with his organs. That is the reason we decided to donate his organs,” Anil said. He said with the help of the commissioner, Surat, they arranged to dispatch the body to Allapur village on Saturday.
mandlewala said Sushil is the third person from Ganjam whose vital organs have helped save the lives of others in the last two years.
