The minister also pointed out how India currently spends around Rs 8 lakh crore on diesel and petrol imports, which may increase to Rs 25 lakh crore in the next five years, if the trend continues. He said that diesel is the worst fuel for the environment as he urged investors to take interest in manufacturing ethanol and other clean and indigenous fuels to reduce dependence on crude oil imports.
Gadkari said that his ministry will soon bring out a policy on flex fuel engines for petrol vehicles in the next 6-8 months. He said that all car and two-wheeler manufacturers will have to use flex engines and the cost will not increase much. “We will ask all automakers to make flex fuel engines that comply with Euro-VI or BS-VI emission norms,”
Earlier, the government was considering importing flex fuel engines from Brazil, which are at par with BS-IV vehicles. Supreme court. The Supreme Court has dismissed the petitions for registration of BS-IV compliant vehicles.
Last week the minister said Vikram Kirloskar NS Toyota-Kirloskar Motors had informed them that they are ready to launch Euro-VI-compliant flex engines that can run on 100% petrol or 100% ethanol.
