Four trekkers from Bengal who went missing after Uttarakhand avalanche were found dead, search for the rest continues

Four of the 11 trekkers who went missing in an avalanche on the Harsil-Chitkul trek route between Himachal Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh were found dead on Friday.

The search and rescue team found their bodies at an altitude of 5,000 metres. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) has recovered two more bodies from the trek route, but they are yet to be identified, the Times of India reported.

Mithun Dari, 32, is the only missing trekker from Bengal who has been rescued so far. Dari is currently undergoing treatment at Harshil Army Hospital. He reportedly told his family members that he saw the snow storm coming over others and later lost contact with them.

Meanwhile, the daughter of one of the missing trekking team members, Sadhan Kumar Basak, on Friday urged the West Bengal government to provide details of their whereabouts and end the agony of the next of kin.

“The last time my father spoke to us on the phone was three days ago. The local administration is yet to confirm the worst-case scenario, but we are getting different reports. I am requesting both the Chief Ministers (West Bengal and Uttarakhand) with folded hands to bring them back to inform them even if it is bad news. I just want to see his face,” the young woman, struggling to contain her tears, was quoted as saying by PTI.

Besides Basak, a resident of Thakurpukur in the city, three others Chandrashekhar Das, Saritshekhar Das, Sagar Dey and one person from Ranaghat, from Bagnan, Howrah, were part of the team.

Ranaghat resident Pritam Roy (27), a fourth year MBBS student of Murshidabad Medical College, had left for the campaign on October 10, and his family received a message on Thursday night that there was no news about him. “I don’t know if my son is dead or alive, but I want to see him. He cannot be trapped in icy caves forever,” said his father Prameet Roy.

Uttarakhand received heavy rains for about three days starting from Sunday night, due to which the Kumaon division had to bear the brunt.
