Four Students Detained After Ruckus Over BBC Documentary Screening; Tight Security Outside Jamia Milia Islamia University

New Delhi: The Delhi Police on Wednesday detained at least four students for allegedly creating ruckus outside Jamia Millia Islamia University over Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the proposed screening of a controversial BBC documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots. Delhi Police said security has been beefed up outside the prestigious university ahead of the screening of the BBC documentary. The Central Reserve Police Force has been deployed outside the Jawaharlal Nehru University following a brawl at the Jawaharlal Nehru University over the screening of the documentary.

The Left-affiliated Students’ Federation of India (SFI) had earlier announced that it would screen the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Jamia Millia Islamia campus at 6 pm.

A poster in this regard was also put up by the Jamia unit of SFI, following which the college authorities took notice of the issue and issued a notice with orders, violation of which would be prosecuted.

It is written in the poster that the documentary will be shown at lawn gate number 8 of MCRC at 6 pm. The university administration, however, said that no permission has been sought for the screening of the documentary and “we will not allow it”.

When contacted, a Jamia official said, “They did not seek permission for the screening and we will not allow the screening. If the students go out of their way to do something, strict action will be taken against them.”

The screening at the Jamia campus comes a day after a similar screening was held at Jawaharlal Nehru University, during which students claimed that electricity and internet were suspended and stones were pelted at them.

This comes after the uproar over the screening of the documentary in JNU. To stop the screening of the documentary, the JNU authorities on Tuesday switched off the power supply to the students’ union office. Internet connection was also taken in the campus. Sources also reported stone pelting between Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members and Leftist students.
