Former Pakistan captain wants Virat Kohli to learn from Kane Williamson

India skipper Virat Kohli is the country’s most successful Test leader – with 33 wins under his belt but hasn’t managed to win an ICC title over the years. Once again, in the WTC final, India suffered an eight-wicket loss to New Zealand when it mattered the most. Another instance when Kohli could not bring home the trophy was in the 2017 Champions Trophy, where they lost to Pakistan in the final.

Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt pointed to a lack in Kohli’s leadership, and confirmed his point with the Indian ability to win the IPL so far.

“You can be a very good captain but if you don’t win a title, the public won’t remember you. Maybe you’re a good captain and you have good plans, but maybe your bowlers are on that. Couldn’t execute. So luck has to support it too. People only remember those who win tournaments,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.

“Sometimes you can’t be a great captain but your team can be great and you can win a big title. So it doesn’t define a captain, but to the world, of course, a good one.” The captain is the one who has won the big tournaments.”

Butt further said that Kohli can model his captaincy on how Kane Williamson works for his team. “Virat Kohli has not won any ICC title nor has he won the IPL. He is a top class cricketer, has excellent body language and is aggressive. His energy level is on a different level, and it is clear that he wants to give his best every time he steps in the middle. But the captains have to be subtle and not be furious,” said the former batsman.

“We kept hearing during the WTC final, that it is a fight between fire (Virat Kohli) and ice (Kane Williamson). Most of the top-class captains who won the title were calm or devoid of gesture in moments of crisis. Virat Kohli is a man full of gestures. Had he won, he would never have been praised.”
