In what can be termed a major “organisational reshuffle” after tasting a defeat in the Ghosi assembly by-election and ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha Polls, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reappointed over 60 district presidents across Uttar Pradesh and has adopted a strict policy “party workers first”. Party insiders, however, said that the move is an outcome of the review of Ghosi bypoll in which the BJP workers accused leaders of ignoring their feedback about resentment among the people for fielding Dara Singh Chauhan as the candidate. However, some party insiders also said that the reshuffle is in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.
The BJP’s move came a couple of days after its state unit chief Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary and other senior party leaders held a meeting to shortlist the names of the district presidents who are to be promoted or reshuffled. Chaudhary said the decision to reshuffle the organisational structure of the party was taken only after discussing the matter with the prominent people. He, however, said that this would not only boost the morale of the district presidents but also clear the deadwood.
Thirty party workers were promoted to district presidents. Among them were Anand Dwivedi, Mahanagar Adyaksha, Sanjay Sharma, District President of Moradabad, Rajesh Shukla, District President of Sitapur, and others.
Party insiders said that the reshuffle and appointment of district presidents have been done keeping caste equations in mind. Among the district presidents promoted, most are from the Other Backward Class (OBC).
Of the total district presidents picked, 30 are OBC, 20 Brahmin, five Dalit, five Kayastha, three Bhumihar, and 10 Vaish, aside from four women.
