‘Focusing on that match is just different’: Sourav Ganguly explains why it’s difficult to organize IND vs PAK matches in India

The India vs Pakistan match is known to be one of the most electrifying clashes in the game of cricket. However, it is ironic that the two teams only meet each other at ICC events. They last played a bilateral series in 2012–2013 when Pakistan won the ODI series 2–1 while the T20I ended 1–1.

After a hiatus of more than two years, arch rivals are all set to clash in a cricket match. Ahead of the much-awaited clash, former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly said that the huge demand for tickets makes it difficult to organize a match between these two teams in India. Therefore, the Board found it easy to organize the competition in the UAE.

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly said, “This is not the first time that we are opening the World Cup with an India-Pakistan match. In 2015 we started with the match against Pakistan. Maybe not in 2019, Champions. The trophy started with the match against Pakistan and then the final took place.

“People used to say that there is a different pressure in India-Pakistan matches, I never felt like that. I became CAB president for the first time, the India-Pakistan match of the 2016 World Cup was held at the Eden Gardens and it was my first match as an administrator.

“Organizing this match in India is even more difficult because there is so much demand for tickets. The focus on that match is different over there which is not really the case here,” he said.

This is the first and last time in Virat Kohli’s career that he will lead India in the T20 World Cup. Also, the fact that Pakistan are yet to register a win against the Men-in-Blue at the World Championships makes the competition more interesting.

As both the teams gear up to start their campaign at the marquee ICC event on Sunday, it will be quite exciting to see if India can continue their winning streak against Babar Azam & Co.
