Fire in Maharashtra hospital: Medical officer, 3 staff nurses arrested for negligence

PUNE: Three days after eleven COVID-19 patients died in a fire at Ahmednagar Civil Hospital’s ICU, Ahmednagar police on Tuesday arrested a woman medical officer and three staff nurses on charges of causing death by negligence, Police said.

Medical officer Dr Vishakha Shinde, and staff nurses Sapna Pathare, Asma Sheikh and Channa Anant were arrested under sections 304 (punishment for culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The state government had already suspended Ahmednagar District Civil Surgeon Dr Sunil Pokharna, Medical Officer Dr Suresh Dhakne and Dr Visakha Shinde and Staff Nurse Sapna Pathare. The services of two staff nurses, Asma Shaikh and Channa Anant, were terminated.

“Dr. Vishakha Shinde was on duty (on November 6 at Ahmednagar Civil Hospital) but she failed to report the incident. As far as the other three staff nurses are concerned, the investigation revealed that when they moved from the ICU When she was outside, the fire broke out,” the SP said, adding that she should not have gone out of the ICU.

He said the primary job of a staff nurse is to protect patients in case of a fire in the ICU. Patil said the relatives of the patients had to rush to the ICU to save their loved ones while all these staff nurses were waiting outside.
