FIR not enough, will not rest till Majithia is arrested: Sidhu

Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu on Sunday said he will not rest until senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who has been booked under the NDPS Act, is arrested. Addressing a public meeting in Batala, Gurdaspur, he said that mere registration of FIR against Majithia is not enough.

Taking a jibe at the senior Akali leader, Sidhu challenged him to come forward and face the law. “Where are you Bikram Majithia,” he said, “if you have the guts, stay home. Are you scared?” In his address, the state Congress chief advocated his ‘Punjab model’ of governance and promised to provide minimum support price on pulses and oilseeds if his party returned to power in the state.

Sidhu also told the gathering that only he fought against the sand mafia for five years. Intensifying his attack against Majithia, he said, “Nothing will happen from the FIR. Till he (Majithia) is not arrested, Sidhu will not rest.” Majithia has been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act on the basis of the 2018 Status Report of the Investigation of Drug Rackets in the State.

The report was filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2018 by Drug Special Task Force (STF) chief Harpreet Singh Sidhu. A Mohali court has also rejected Majithia’s anticipatory bail plea. A lookout circular has also been issued against the former Punjab minister, which bars a person from leaving the country.

Taking a dig at his own party’s government, Sidhu asked the gathering whether he was getting cable TV connection at Rs 100 per month. “There can be many announcements. Are you getting cable for Rs 100? Are you getting sand free, its (sand) cost is Rs 3,700-4,400 (trolley),” he said.

“That’s why I am telling you that it will not work with mere talks. It will come with a policy and budgetary allocation, it will not work with ‘jugaad’,” the Congress leader said. Last month, Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi had announced that the charges for cable TV connections have been fixed at Rs 100 per month.

Advocating his ‘Punjab model’ of governance, Sidhu said if it gets approval from the party leadership, a sand trolley would be available for just Rs 1,000. He said that this time either there will be sand and liquor mafia.

“Punjab’s land is being looted even today and the state is being mortgaged,” he alleged. Stating that no rival political party has given any roadmap for the agriculture sector, Sidhu promised minimum support prices for oilseeds and pulses if his party returned to power.

Stating that Batala is known for its foundry industry, Sidhu said that the local industry will be allowed to buy the cheapest power wherever it is available in the country. He also asked the gathering not to fall in the trap of AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Sidhu hit out at the Delhi Chief Minister for not promising jobs to the people in the national capital.

Without naming anyone, Sidhu said that if people want to save the next generation of Punjab, punish people like Majithia, bring justice in sacrilege incidents and give employment to the youth, then they should hire an honest person. should be brought to the top. “The chief minister does everything, he has absolute power,” he said.

“If you put an honest person at the top, honesty and transparency will come down,” the Congress leader said. Sidhu also supported the candidature of local leader Ashwini Sekhri from Batala seat.
