Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla on Monday said the low number of COVID-19 cases at the moment is because the country has chosen the right vaccine. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the ‘Alternate Fuel Conclave’, he said that the fourth wave, if it happens, is expected to be mild.

Speaking on the booster dose he said, “Regarding the booster dose, we have appealed to the government, because everyone who needs to travel, needs a booster dose. They (government) are having internal discussions and soon A policy on booster doses may be announced.” Poonawalla said that all other countries are doing this and now it is time for India to take a look at this (booster dose). The center had done a great job by covering most of the eligible adult population with two vaccine doses. “Our vaccines have proven to be better than other countries. Look at the US and Europe, they have a lot of cases. We have fewer cases because we chose the right vaccines,” he said.

Asked whether the vaccines in their current form work on the new coronavirus variant, he said they will work only if a booster dose is taken, as it will create protection against future variants. Poonawalla said that in India, experts are deciding to mix vaccines, although it is allowed around the world.

Pune-based SII Covishield manufactures the vaccine.
