ministry of Education (MOE), Govt. India All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) for 2020-2021 has been released. AISHE collects detailed information on various parameters such as students’ enrolment, teacher’s data, financial information and infrastructure information among others. As per the survey, the female Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) has crossed the male GER. Gender Parity Index (GPI), the ratio of female GER to male GER, has increased from 1 in 2017-18 to 1.05 in 2020-21, states AISHE.

Female enrollment saw a marginal increase from 1.88 crore to 2.01 crore in 2019-20. Meanwhile, the percentage of female enrollment to total enrollment has also increased from 45 per cent in 2014-15 to 49 per cent in 2020-21, the report noted. In addition, there has been an increase in female enrollment by about 44 lakh (which is 28 per cent), the report said.

“There is an increase of about 44,00,000 (28%) from 2014-15. This means that the percentage of female enrollment in total enrollment has increased from 45% in 2014-15 to around 49% in 2020-21,” the ministry said at AISHE.

Further, the total enrollment in higher education is expected to increase from 3.85 million in 2019-20 to around 4.14 million in 2020-21. Since 2014-15, the enrollment has increased by about 72,00,000 (i.e. 21 percent). Meanwhile, female enrollment has increased from 1.88 million in 2019-20 to 2.01 million in 2020-2021. The report also states that more women candidates have enrolled themselves in science programs than men.

AISHE results show that in 2020-21, female enrollment in the northeastern states was 6.14 lakh, higher than male enrollment at 5.92 lakh; This means that for every 100 male students, there are a total of 104 female students in the North East region. This surprising trend has been happening in the North East since 2018-19 when female enrollment surpassed male enrollment for the first time.

Government universities and colleges account for 73.1 percent and 34.5 percent of this enrollment (about 59 percent and 21.4 percent of the total, respectively).

States like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan form the top six in terms of number of students enrolled.

The ministry has been administering AISHE since 2011, covering all higher educational institutions located in the country.
