Surat: Cops booked a woman and her brother for allegedly abetting a 27-year-old man to commit suicide.
Deceased Rahul Singh, who was found hanging on June 27 at his home in Patel Nagar of Udhna, had left a suicide note which he shared on his Facebook page alleging his live-in partner Sonam Ali and her brother Mukhtar Ali of forcing him to eat beef and torture owing to which he had taken the extreme step.
A complaint was lodged in this regard by Vinadevi, mother of the deceased.
Sonam had reported about Singh’s death to the police on June 27. According to the initial complaint, Singh was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a dupatta. Based on preliminary investigation, cops registered a case of accidental death.
Singh started living with Sonam in Patel Nagar around a year ago as his family was against their relationship and was asked to leave home if he wanted to marry her. Natives of Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, Singh’s mother and sister live in Limbayat area.
After moving in with Sonam, Singh was not in touch with his family and they had no knowledge about his whereabouts, the mother claimed in her complaint. She also stated that they were unsure if Singh and Sonam were married.
Meanwhile, Singh’s relatives informed Vinadevi recently that her son is dead and that they came to know about it from a suicide note which they had found uploaded on Singh’s Facebook page. “Some relative in UP, who was in Singh’s friendlist noticed the suicide note. The family claims that the deceased posted the note on the day he killed himself,” a police officer in Udhna police station told TOI.
“The family has provided us with the Facebook page details while we are also trying to collect more information from the social media site about the date and time of the post,” the police said.
“In the suicide note, Singh allegedly wrote that he was threatened to be killed if he would not consume beef. He claimed that he was ending life due to the torture. He did not elaborate on how he was being tortured,” cops added.
The mother expressed ignorance about her son’s death as he was not in touch. Singh had come to live in the city with her mother and sister a few months ago and started to work at a textile dyeing mill. He met Sonam at the workplace and developed friendship.
Deceased intimated his family about his wish to marry Sonam to which they objected. Police claimed that Singh and Sonam were living together but could not find any marriage-related documents.
