Farmers stop screening of Akshay Kumar-Katrina Kaif’s ‘Sooryavanshi’ in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur

Hoshiarpur: A group of farmers protesting against central agricultural laws forced five cinema halls here on Saturday to stop screening of Akshay Kumar-starrer “Sooryavanshi”. Some of them tore the posters of the film put up outside the theatres, saying that they were protesting against actor Akshay Kumar for not supporting the protest.

The workers of Bharti Kisan Union (Qadian) led by the organization’s District President Swaran Dhugga took out a demonstration and protest march from the local Shaheed Udham Singh Park to Swarn Cinema against the screening of the film.

He forced the cinema hall authorities to stop the screening of the film, and condemned the actor for not speaking in support of his protest.

The protesters said they would not allow his films to be screened until the agricultural laws were repealed.

Hundreds of farmers have been camping at the borders of Delhi since November last year, demanding the government repeal three agricultural laws – the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

They claim that these laws will leave them at the mercy of the corporates. They are also demanding a new law to guarantee the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for their crops.

The Centre, which has held 11 rounds of talks with farmers to break the impasse, has said the new laws are pro-farmer.
