Farmers on Sunday blocked roads and highways in Punjab for two hours in protest against the lathi-charge on farmers in Haryana. Out of allegiance to various farmer bodies, protesters burnt effigies of the BJP-led government in Haryana to use “force” on farmers in Karnal.

At least 10 people were injured after police on Saturday allegedly lathi-charged a group of farmers who blocked traffic on a national highway going towards Karnal in protest against a BJP meeting. The two-hour-long agitation that started at 12 noon in Punjab also caused problems for the commuters stuck in jam at many places.

Due to the protest, vehicular movement was disrupted at many places and affected routes on Jalandhar-Pathankot Highway, Ludhiana-Chandigarh Highway, Amritsar-Ganganagar Highway and Ferozepur-Zira Road. Sarwan Singh Pandher, general secretary of Kisan Sangharsh Mazdoor Samiti strongly condemned the lathi charge on farmers by Haryana Police.

The Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (Ekta Ugrahan) held protests at 56 places in the state and condemned the “shameful” act of the Khattar government.

Meanwhile, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu also condemned the action of Haryana Police on farmers in Karnal. He said, “The reprehensible attack on the protesting farmers is an attack on the fundamental rights of every Indian… Earned after innumerable sacrifices during the freedom struggle, it affects and disrupts the spirit of the Constitution and the backbone of India’s democracy. breaks it!!” tweeted and also shared a video of the “use of force” by the police on farmers in Haryana.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Saturday expressed surprise at the “merciless brutality” of the Haryana Police and slammed Khattar for “exposing such a vicious attack on peacefully protesting farmers”, many of whom were injured in the lathi charge.
