Raising mentally strong kids who are skilled at meeting real-world challenges requires parents to abandon unhealthy practices that can rob kids of mental strength. Mental strength helps children overcome setbacks and gives them the ability to keep going until they achieve their goals. Parenting and English coach, Dr Pallavi Rao Chaturvedi has listed some important things that parents should not do for their children if they want them to learn how to deal with challenges in the future.

According to Dr. Pallavi, children need to learn how to deal with problems and challenges on their own. An excerpt from his Instagram post read, “Unfortunately at times, we feel like we are helping them with shortcuts when we are not. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a step back and let them figure things out for themselves. Falling is also a learned skill!” He also shared five things that parents should not do for their kids, which are:

do their homework for them

Many parents do homework themselves instead of letting their children do it. This not only makes them dependent but is also a hindrance to the knowledge that they should be gaining from doing that homework.

making all the decisions for them

It is quite common for your child to make every single decision. But you should let your child take decisions on their own as they need to learn from their mistakes. It will also boost the decision making skills of the child at an early age.

overpraise them for everything they do

You should stop praising them for everything they do. Along with praising, you should also tell their mistakes. Tell your children when they are wrong so that they learn to accept criticism in the future.

Give them what they want, when they want it

You need to stop falling for those innocent eyes when your kid shows you something they want. Make them work for the things they demand. For example, ask them to study well and score a certain grade on a test to get a toy or whatever they need.

Always protect them from failure.

It is just like learning to ride a bicycle. If you catch your kids every time they fall, the training wheels won’t be taken off anytime soon. Let them fall once, it will teach them to stand on their own.
