Every quarter will be important in Hockey Women’s World Cup: Vandana Kataria

experienced person India Forward Vandana Katariya has stressed on the need to be vigilant in “every quarter” of the game while starting her campaign in Hockey Women’s World Cup Spain and Netherlands 2022 against England in Pool B on July 3

The 30-year-old said every match in the group stage is important and no team should be taken lightly.

“Every match in the group stage will be important and we cannot take any team easy. The most important aspect for us is to be consistent every quarter and be the best without worrying too much about the rival. It is something that we have learned over the years and it has really worked for us,” said the veteran striker with over 250 international caps.

In their second match, India will play China on 5 July followed by a match against New Zealand in Amstelveen on 7 July.

“We have played warm-up matches against Chile and Ireland. Both were great as we were able to practice some tactical moves for the upcoming games and be able to get used to the area which is always easier when you train on it,” said Kataria.

With just one day left for the team to play its first match, the enthusiasm among the players is clearly visible. “We have another training session on Friday and we are ready to go. It will be a very interesting and intense World Cup and I expect the matches to be very close as there will be around five to six teams on par.

With the first match of the tournament being played between Spain and Canada later on Friday, Kataria urged fans to follow the matches and garner their support for the India team. “When we were playing Tokyo Olympics 2020, we were unaware of the kind of support we were getting from home in India, where people were glued to their TV sets.

“After coming back we got so much love and appreciation, and it meant a lot to us and it inspired us to achieve more. I hope fans show us the same kind of support and watch the match live. We want to win a medal for the fans, for the country and end the wait for a medal at a prestigious global event.”
